Chapter 14 · Management & Operations

Management and Operations: Rolls, Exit Rules, and Expiry Hazards

Thirteen chapters have been about what happens before you enter: which structure, which risks, what size. This one is about afterwards — the things that appear on no payoff diagram yet genuinely determine your account's outcome: when to roll, when to leave, what happens on expiration day, and what your order type means on a morning when liquidity disappears.

14.1 The Honest Arithmetic of a Roll

The roll is a seller's most frequent action and the easiest place to deceive yourself. Its seduction: a roll almost always brings in a net credit — money arrives in the account and it feels like managing the position. Take a concrete example.

原仓Original
卖 $100 Put,收 $3.00Sold the $100 put for $3.00
现状Now
Stock $92, 10 days left
Cost to close
$7.99(已亏 $4.99)$7.99 (a $4.99 loss)
Roll to 45 days
0.85Collect $8.84, net credit $0.85

Note the two faces of this trade. On the statement: you received $0.85, a "credit roll," which many people record as successful management. In reality: you paid $7.99 to close a position you originally sold for $3.00 — that $4.99 loss has already happened, and the roll didn't erase it, it moved it from this month to next. The $0.85 you collected isn't profit; it's the new premium you charged for betting again.

展期后的新头寸:它是一笔全新的交易the rolled position: it is an entirely new trade

The only question that judges a roll

Not "did I collect a credit," but: if I held nothing today, would I open this new position from scratch? In the example above, the rolled position is "short a 45-day $100 put with a maximum loss of $91.16" — while the underlying trades at $92, already down 8%. Do Chapter 7's three preconditions still hold: would you still be happy to own at $100? Is the size still right?

If the answer is no, then this roll is not management but the renewal of a judgment you no longer hold — rubber-stamped by the fact that a credit arrived. Chapter 8's three headstones all bear the amplified version of this move: a run of success inflates size, and a run of rolls removes the need to admit a loss has occurred. The only legitimate reason to roll is "I would still open this position today," never "I don't want to book the loss."

14.2 Two Mechanical Rules

Since discretionary management slides easily into self-deception, two mechanical rules circulate widely among sellers. Their value isn't optimality but removing the decision from your mood at the moment:

Close at 50%
Exit once half the credit is earned
21 DTE 离场Exit at 21 DTE
Close or roll at 21 days left

Both rest on Chapter 3's two curves. Closing at 50% exploits theta's shape: the first half of a credit decays on the best terms — you earned it while carrying less time and less gamma; holding on means earning the remaining half over a longer stretch under steeper gamma. Exiting at 21 DTE dodges precisely that steepest stretch: Chapter 3 computed that an ATM option's gamma triples into expiry week, and a seller is the short-gamma side. Together they say one thing: park the position in the segment with the best reward-to-risk, and don't wade into expiry week for the last scrap of premium.

What a mechanical rule is really for

There is nothing sacred about 50% and 21 — 40% and 25 days would work about as well. Their value lies in having been written down in advance. Chapter 9's checklist item ④ demanded a specific number for the worst case before entering; the same logic governs the exit: deciding when to leave while you hold nothing, and therefore feel nothing, is the only moment at which that decision is uncontaminated by an unrealised loss. A slightly suboptimal rule you actually follow beats an optimal one you find exceptions to every time.

14.3 Three Hazards on Expiration Day

Chapter 12 introduced pin risk: at expiry the underlying sits on your short strike and you won't know until Monday's open whether you were assigned. It is the best known of the three. The other two are more mechanical and far easier to avoid — provided you know they exist.

The Second Hazard: A Division You Can Do in Ten Seconds

When does the holder of an American call exercise early? The answer is precise: when the time value they surrender is worth less than the dividend they capture. Exercising means buying the stock now and therefore receiving the upcoming dividend, at the cost of throwing away the call's remaining time value. So the test is a single comparison:

短 Call 的剩余时间价值 < 股息 → 你会被提前指派 short call's remaining time value < the dividend → you get assigned

0.80): Turned into concrete numbers by the engine (stock $100, dividend $0.80):

The row worth staring at is the first against the second: same strike, and merely going from 30 days to 10 drops the time value from $0.82 to $0.18 — from "safe" to "certain to be assigned." The closer to expiry and the deeper in the money a short call is, the more exposed it becomes — and those two conditions are exactly where covered calls and the Wheel routinely sit in normal operation (Chapters 2 and 7).

The asymmetry is the point. Being assigned means delivering the shares at the strike and forgoing the $0.80 dividend; avoiding it costs only the $0.18 of time value you pay to close or roll early. Put plainly: $0.18 spent avoids $0.80 lost plus an unplanned share delivery. All you have to do is run that comparison before each ex-dividend date — the best cost-benefit ratio of any action in this book.

Stated simplification: the option prices and time values are Black-Scholes values from this book's engine (stock $100, 20% IV, 4% rate, priced without a dividend adjustment) and are illustrative; the $0.80 dividend is assumed. Real markets also involve interest and borrow costs, and the early-exercise decision belongs to the counterparty, who is not always rational. What is shown is the shape of the rule, not a prediction about any specific contract.

Loss avoided: unchecked, early assignment costs the $0.80 dividend plus an unplanned delivery → paying the $0.18 of remaining time value to close or roll early prevents it

The third hazard is settlement, and it has a clean solution. Chapter 1 covered American versus European; here is what that distinction looks like operationally:

SPX
European · cash-settled · no early assignment
SPY
American · physically settled · early assignment and dividend risk
Contract size

If your exposure is to an index, using European, cash-settled contracts like SPX eliminates both of this section's first two hazards at once: nobody can exercise early (Chapter 1's Berkshire and Chapter 10's 1R0NYMAN are footnotes to this), and expiration day cannot hand you an unexpected stock position — the P/L simply settles in cash. The cost is a much larger contract, and therefore coarser position sizing. (In the United States, contracts like SPX also receive different tax treatment from equity options; this book gives no tax advice — consult a professional, and note this applies to US taxpayers only.)

14.4 Order Types: On a Morning When Liquidity Vanishes

CASE FILE · 2015-08-24

Stop Orders Did Exactly What They Were Built to Do

On August 24, 2015, the U.S. market opened into extreme volatility and widespread trading pauses. The SEC's Division of Economic and Risk Analysis later examined ETF trading on a consistent basis: 302 of the 1,569 ETFs in its sample (19.2%) experienced at least one trading pause. That official statistic is sufficient to show the stress on liquidity and price discovery; this book no longer mixes other exact counts reported with different denominators and time windows.

The problem was especially acute for ETFs. When constituent securities are paused, stale or trading out of sync, market makers have greater difficulty estimating an executable portfolio value and hedging it, so they may widen spreads or withdraw quotes. The last displayed price, an indicative NAV and the next executable price can diverge materially in such conditions.

This is the boundary of a stop-market order: the stop price determines when the order becomes a market order; it does not guarantee the execution price. When quotes gap or bids are thin, the next executable price may be far from the trigger. The order has not malfunctioned; it chose execution certainty over price control. A stop-limit order chooses price control instead, but may not fill at all.

For an options trader, the executable lessons are: ① default to a combo limit order with an explicit price boundary, especially for multi-leg structures; ② treat a stop-market order as "execution first, price not guaranteed", not as a cap on maximum loss; and ③ at the open, after a trading pause, or when quotes are visibly dislocated, wait for executable spreads to return when the risk mandate permits. Whether immediate liquidation is mandatory depends on the risk constraint; "never use a market order" is not a substitute for an emergency plan.

Evidence and method: 302 / 1,569 comes from the SEC DERA analysis of ETF trading pauses on August 24, 2015. The execution boundaries of order types are described by SEC Investor.gov's order-type guidance. This mechanism discussion does not reconstruct any particular investor's fill.

Execution risk reduced: a stop-market order seeks execution after triggering but does not guarantee price → a limit or stop-limit order defines a price boundary, at the cost of possibly not filling

On 0DTE: this book won't teach it, but you must know its scale

0DTE(当日到期期权)已经不是边缘现象。 0DTE — options expiring the same day — is no longer a fringe phenomenon. Cboe's 2025 year-end review reports that 0DTE represented 59% of SPX option volume that year. Cboe's monthly volume release of August 5, 2026 adds that in July 2026 alone, 0DTE reached a record 66.2% of total SPX option volume. A full-year average and a single-month value are different bases and cannot be joined into one trend line.

Near expiry and near the money, gamma is often very high, so delta can change rapidly for a small move in the underlying; time value may also decay quickly. The sensitivity depends on moneyness, implied volatility and time remaining, so an asymptotic limiting case must not be generalized to every expiring contract. The scale of 0DTE affects SPX's intraday trading environment, but high volume is not a strategy edge; risk, cost and execution fit still require independent evidence.

Every recommendation in this chapter — limit orders, no stops, run the dividend comparison, leave at 21 days — raises the expected return of exactly none of your trades. They only stop you from handing back, procedurally, what you already earned. If an entire chapter creates no return and only reduces leakage, where does it belong in your trading system? Set it beside Chapter 9's "size is the only variable you fully control": this chapter is about the second one.

14.5 Chapter Quiz

Click an option to answer; the correct answer and explanation appear immediately.

You sold a $100 put for $3; the stock is now $92 and closing costs $7.99. Rolling to 45 days brings a $0.85 net credit. What does that roll mean?

C。 C. You paid $7.99 to close a position originally sold for $3.00 — that $4.99 is a realized loss and the roll cannot erase it. The $0.85 isn't profit; it's the new premium you charged for betting again. A and B are exactly where this move gets dangerous: a credit creates the impression that a gain occurred, removing the need to admit the loss did. The only question that judges a roll: "holding nothing today, would I open this?" — and here that is "short a 45-day $100 put risking $91.16" with the stock already at $92.

Your short $95 call has 10 days left and $0.18 of remaining time value; the stock goes ex-dividend $0.80 next week. What happens?

B。 B. The test is one comparison: remaining time value < dividend → early exercise favours the holder. $0.18 < $0.80, so they exercise, take the dividend, and you deliver at $95. C confuses American with European (Chapter 1) — an American option can be exercised any day. The asymmetry is what matters: not checking costs the $0.80 dividend plus an unplanned delivery, while closing early costs only $0.18 of time value. It is the best cost-benefit ratio of any action in this book.

When a market gaps and bids are thin, what most accurately describes a triggered stop-market order?

D。 D. The stop in a stop-market order is a trigger condition, not price protection. Once triggered, the order seeks execution as a market order; after a gap, a pause or a very wide spread, the fill may be far from the stop. A stop-limit order defines a price boundary, but may not execute if the market moves through it. The two instructions make different choices between execution certainty and price certainty.

What is the principal value of the "close at 50%" and "exit at 21 DTE" rules?

A。 A. The numbers aren't sacred — 40% and 25 days would serve about as well (not B). The value lies in having written them down beforehand: deciding the exit while you hold nothing, and so feel nothing, is the only moment the decision is clean. It is the same principle as Chapter 9's checklist item ④ (state the worst case as a number before entering). C overclaims: what they mainly reduce is exposure to expiry-week negative gamma, not expectancy. A slightly suboptimal rule you actually follow beats an optimal one you find exceptions to every time.

Cboe reports that 0DTE represented 59% of SPX option volume in 2025. What is this book's position?

C。 C. A 59% share makes 0DTE an important part of SPX market structure, but "many people do it" is not a reason to participate. Near-expiry, near-the-money contracts often have very high gamma and rapidly changing delta; a short holding period also leaves less time to correct an error. That explains why the market impact matters, but it does not replace independent evidence of edge, costs and execution risk.

Key Takeaways

Post-entry process must keep a new trade separate from the old P/L: a net credit on a roll does not reverse the loss realized when the old position was closed; the decision test is "would I open this new position from flat today?" The value of mechanical exits is not that 50% or 21 DTE is universally optimal, but that the behavioural boundary was defined in advance. Pin risk, dividend-related early exercise and settlement method each require separate expiry handling. August 24, 2015 adds another boundary: a stop-market trigger does not guarantee execution price; a limit or stop-limit order defines price but may not execute. None of these tools guarantees a smaller loss on every trade; what can be controlled is order intent, exit criteria and the emergency boundary for dislocated markets.
