Chapter 06 · Event Trading
Event Trading: Earnings, IV Crush, and Spread Design
Earnings is retail's favorite options setting and the fastest place to lose money. Not because people read the company wrong, but because they miss this: in event trading you never face "what will the company do," you face "will the company be more extreme than the expectation already priced." This chapter takes that gap apart to the cent.
6.1 The Three Phases of an Event
Every event with a known date — earnings, an FDA decision, a rate meeting, a referendum — drives option prices through the same three-phase shape:
- ① 堆积① Build-up
IV grinds up, premium accrues
Resolution
Result lands, the stock gaps
Evaporation
IV collapses to baseline in minutes
TYPICAL EARNINGS WEEK · IV (典型形态示意)(illustrative shape)
The third phase is decisive and the most underrated. IV crush isn't an occasional accident; it is structural and very nearly certain: event premium exists only because of uncertainty, and the moment results are published the uncertainty is gone, leaving the premium no reason to exist. You can plan around it as a scheduled event — and most people who lose money treat it as bad luck.
Share prices, dates and events are real history. Option prices are Black-Scholes values, with the IV input reverse-calibrated to the expected move the market publicly quoted at the time (META, for instance, calibrates to about 144% event IV to reproduce the ±8.5% then being quoted). They are model figures, not fills; skew on a real chain shifts the exact numbers, but the magnitudes and conclusions hold.
6.2 IV Crush 的解剖6.2 Anatomy of an IV Crush
Chapter 3 gave IV crush an exact definition: vega times a large negative number. Now compute it. A pre-earnings option's price contains a block of "event premium" equal to vega × (event IV − baseline IV). After the report that block vanishes entirely, regardless of which way the stock went.
This creates a threshold buyers must clear: the stock's actual move must be large enough to compensate for premium that is guaranteed to evaporate. And the market's expected move is exactly the height of that threshold. Chapter 5's ATM-straddle estimate applies again: stock at $200 with a $16 pre-earnings straddle makes ±8% your passing grade — not "up means profit," but "up more than 8% means profit."
Event trading therefore reduces to a clean question with only three possible answers:
More than priced
Be the buyer
Less than priced
Be the seller (defined risk)
I don't know
No trade
Note the third answer is the equal of the first two. It isn't timidity, it's a legitimate solution to the question — in fact the most common correct one. For the vast majority of earnings, you do not know more than the market.
6.3 When the Tail Really Does Exceed the Price
CASE FILE · 2022-02
Meta's One Night: −26.4%, Three Times the Price
After the close on February 2, 2022, Meta reported Q4 2021. The quarter itself wasn't a disaster, but two things broke the market: Facebook's daily active users declined sequentially for the first time ever, alongside guidance far below expectations. February 2 closed at $323.00; February 3 closed at $237.76 — −26.4% in a session, erasing roughly $232 billion of market value, then the largest single-day loss in US market history.
META · FEB 2022 (收盘价)(closes)
Going in, the option market quoted an expected move of roughly ±8.5%. The realized move was −26.4% — about 3.1× the price. This is the perfect inverse of Chapter 5's Brexit case: there, a record one-day fall only just reached the price; here, reality left the price far behind.
Three ways of expressing the same bearish view produced the following (on the model basis stated above):
Short the stock
- +26.4%
300 PutLong $300 put
- $4.79 → $62.24 = +1,199%
- 买 300/270 Put 价差300/270 put spread
- $4.19 → $30.00 = +616%
This is the first time Chapter 4's "cost of the cap" genuinely bites. The spread cost only 12% less than the outright put, but sealed the payoff at $30 while intrinsic value ran to $62. When the tail actually arrives, the spread hands back half the return. Chapter 4 said spreads only clearly lose "in the explosive move you didn't foresee" — this was that move.
300 Put +1,199%Profit amplified: the same bearish view, +26.4% short the stock → +1,199% via the $300 put
That +1,199% is toxic. It tempts people into "buy OTM options before earnings," one of the most reliably expensive habits there is. Remember the other face of that $300 put: had Meta fallen only 8% — exactly what was priced — it would have expired at $0. What made it worth $62 was a tail roughly three times the price, and by definition that is rare. The correct mentality for buying event options isn't "this one will move big," it's "I believe the market systematically underprices magnitude here, and I accept repeatedly paying small amounts that go to zero." Chapter 5's Brexit case is the same coin's other side: there the tail did arrive, and buyers still made nothing.

CASE FILE · 2021-01
3.5%Apple's Best Quarter Ever, and the −3.5% That Followed
After the close on January 27, 2021, Apple reported the best quarter in its history: $111.4 billion of revenue, the first quarter ever above $100 billion, up roughly 21% year over year, with EPS above expectations. Anyone reading only the fundamentals would call it a rout.
The next day, January 28, Apple closed at $137.09, down −3.5% from the prior day's $142.06.
AAPL · JAN 2021 (收盘价)(closes)
Because the market already knew. Apple had run from about $122 to about $143 in the two months before the report — that run was the market pricing the good quarter — and the company gave no forward guidance. The pre-earnings expected move was about ±5.6%, and the realized move was just −3.5%: inside the priced range. For an option buyer that is the worst possible combination: wrong direction, insufficient magnitude, and a collapsing IV on top.
Three people, all bullish on Apple, the morning after:
Held the stock
- −3.5%
- 卖 138/130 Put 价差Sold 138/130 put spread
12% on risk
142 CallBought the $142 call
- $4.04 → $0.76 = −81%
One correct read on the company, three structures, a 23-fold difference in loss. About 40% of that call's loss came directly from IV falling 45% to 30% — with the stock frozen it would still have lost a third. This is the full mechanism behind "right on direction, still down money": you never bought direction alone, you also bought a piece of uncertainty that was guaranteed to be voided the instant results were published.
亏损减少:同一个看多苹果的判断,裸买财报前 Call −81% → 直接持股 −3.5%Loss reduced: the same bullish view, −81% buying the pre-earnings call → −3.5% simply holding shares
6.5 Structure Choice: Buy, Sell, or Stand Aside
Set the two cases side by side and the structural choice becomes clear. It turns on one thing: which side of the market's price your own view of magnitude falls on.
You think it exceeds the price (buy). Buy the outright option rather than the spread — the Meta case shows the spread surrenders half the return when the tail truly arrives. But size it so that a total loss doesn't matter, because this kind of call has an inherently low win rate. You think it falls short of the price (sell). Use a defined-risk structure without exception — an iron condor or a credit spread, never a naked short. The tail on earnings looks like Meta's 3.1×, and a naked seller has no floor on that kind of night.
AAPL 138/130 BULL PUT SPREAD · 卖方视角的同一个看多观点· the same bullish view, from the seller's side
There's a third path people overlook: the calendar spread. Sell the contract expiring in earnings week and buy the same strike a week or a month out. The logic is neat: the near-dated contract holds the most event premium and crushes hardest, the far-dated one crushes less, so you sell the one that collapses most. It is purpose-built for "I'm confident IV collapses but I don't want a directional bet." Its cost is needing the stock to stay near the strike — a Meta-style gap damages it too.
① Verify the earnings date yourself. Companies reschedule, and one reschedule turns your "event option" into a pure time-decay ticket. ② Don't count on closing after hours. US single-stock options trade 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET. When earnings come out after the close, most single-stock options cannot trade that night, so the position carries the overnight gap in the stock. Cboe has announced that, effective October 19, 2026, options on 24 single stocks (including AAPL, META and NVDA) gain a 4:00–4:15 p.m. Curb session and a 7:30–9:25 a.m. pre-market session the next day (5 ETFs gain the pre-market session only), but these sessions accept limit orders only, not market or stop orders; there is still no trading between the end of Curb and 7:30 the next morning, and their liquidity should not be expected to match the daytime market. The planned approach is to set your closing limit in advance and trade once liquidity returns. ③ Do Chapter 5's division. Before entering, compute the ATM straddle total ÷ share price and write that percentage down. If you can't say which side of that number your view falls on, you have no reason to trade — and "no trade" isn't giving up, it's this question's correct answer.
6.6 Chapter Quiz
Click an option to answer; the correct answer and explanation appear immediately.
Apple posts its best-ever quarter and the stock falls 3.5% the next day. The most reasonable explanation:
A pre-earnings ATM straddle is $12 with the stock at $150. After earnings the stock rises 5%. The ATM call buyer most likely:
为什么裸买 Put(+1,199%)远胜 Put 价差(+616%)?Meta fell 3.1× the priced move. Why did the outright put (+1,199%) so far outrun the put spread (+616%)?
You believe a company will move less than the market has priced. The most appropriate action:
You hold a put on a single stock such as META or AAPL. The company reports after the close, the stock plunges after hours, and your put looks like a big winner; you want to lock in the profit tonight. Which judgment is most accurate?
Key Takeaways
Event trading poses exactly one real question: will the realized move be larger or smaller than the price already set — and that price is written plainly in the ATM straddle's quote. Meta fell 3.1× its priced move in February 2022, turning a $300 put into a twelve-bagger; Apple delivered the best quarter in its history in January 2021 and an ATM call still lost 81%. Neither was luck; they are two answers to the same division problem. IV crush isn't an accident but a calendar item: event premium exists only because of uncertainty, and when results publish the reason disappears. So buyers must accept frequent total losses, and sellers must use defined-risk structures — because the tail on earnings is shaped exactly like Meta's. And when you've done the division and still can't say which side you're on, "no trade" is this question's correct answer, fully equal to the other two.
